Comic inking techniques are rooted in the fine arts. Chinese ink painting practices has been around for over 2000 years and help comic artists to be their very best at inking once they mastered the medium. With Chinese inking, a single stroke can produce considerable variations in tonality, from deep black to silvery gray. Therefore, in this context shading means more than just dark-light arrangement: It is the basis for the nuance in tonality found in East Asian art.

In celebration of the Lunar New Year, Focus comic will be launching a free online Chinese shuǐ-mò (水墨, “water and ink”) art program for autistic and special needs youth (6-17).

On Sunday January 22nd 2023, at 2pm-2.40pm, Yvonne Wan of Focus comic will offer free virtual art workshop on the art of Chinese ink painting. Students will learn how to paint a rabbit in celebration of the Year of the Rabbit, and cultural diversity on zoom. They will also learn a little bit about rabbits. There will be an in person graduation event on Saturday Jan 28th, 10am at Aventura Apartments Club house in Avondale where our graduates will have their art will be exhibited. Our students will receive a custom certificate of achievement featuring their art, and they will receive prize gifts to celebrate their accomplishments.
